I have an iPhone 5 that is supposedly factory unlocked and I'm using it on Verizon. Since I've gotten it, going to Settings > Phone had "Unknown" in the My Number field. I have experimented with the issue and restored over and over.
It has been happening on 7.0.6 and still occurring after the 7.1 update.
I not sure anymore of the carrier that the phone is really intended for. I thought it was factory unlocked when I bought it (used). When the Verizon SIM is in, the Carrier section of General > About says Verizon. When it is removed and there is no SIM, the Carrier section says it is TFW.
Does that mean this is really a TracFone iPhone 5, or was it unlocked after? Or do factory unlocked phones work this way? It shows up normally on the My Verizon site as an unlocked phone should.
Also, the status bar does not show the carrier text some of the time. Only after around 12-24 hours of restarting the phone or reinstalling the SIM, it will say "Verizon". Otherwise, it is blank (as we all wish).
But this is something I've never seen. When in a call, the bar says "Verizon Wireless" all spelled out. On a normal Verizon 5s that I have, this is not the case. I've never seen it like that.
There are no issues with normal SMS texting, but MMS doesn't seem to work (Can't send pictures). I have to rely on these since I can't activate iMessage on my number (and ain't nobody sending iMessages to my email). Data over 3G/LTE is fine, no issues with that.
I've put the SIM from this phone into my 5s and vice versa. The issues persisted on the 5, and the 5s activated the new SIM perfectly and had no iMessage/My Number issues.
If anyone's had this issue and has resolved it I'd appreciate the help. I have heard that Carrier bundles can be flashed to set a phone for the proper carrier.
