iPhone problems after getting wet

Okay, so this is a relatively unique thing and after a few days of not finding anything similar on the internet, I decided to ask you guys for help. Sorry, if I am doing this in a wrong thread - I'm new here.

Anyway, a few months ago, my iPhone 3GS (an old one) fell into the sink. It got water all over it (and some even under the digitizer). After I got it dry and cleaned it a little (did not use any chemicals), I tried to turn it on, but it did not show any signs of life. So, after waiting a few days I tried to charge it. After a few minutes of just randomly trying to start the charge and then shutting down again, it actually succeeded in charging itself. But then, once it was fully charged, it would only work for a few hours. After that, it would just randomly doze off without any signs of life again. When put on a charger again, it would just repeatedly show the charging sign (the red empty battery), the Apple icon and then go off again. Left it on the charger for a few hours - nothing changed. It would only turn back on again if I left it untouched (not charging) for a day or two. I have changed the battery, but it did not help. I also restored my iOS, because a guy in a third party shop said, that it might help. He was wrong.

Now, I have to note the fact that it works fine while it actually works. I could do pretty much anything, from calling or surfing the net, to actually restoring the iOS. It would work just fine. But then, it would suddenly go off and not respond. The only improvement I have managed to achieve is the fact that it is possible to restart it after I changed the battery, because before that, if I turned it off, it would not come back on.

Another thing to note is the fact that it does not fully shut down, when it sort of dozes off. That is because it does not ask me to unlock the SIM card, after I manage to get it back to life. This dozing off is something different.

So, after this long introduction to the situation I am in, this is what I am asking: does any of you have any idea of what the hell is wrong with this thing (apart the obvious fact that it got wet) and is it possible/worth the trouble to fix it? It is an old phone, but it is still one that I like and have done for a while now.
