iTunes doesn't recognize iPhone 5 or iPad 3

I have tried this:

I have tried different usb cables and ports and turning the lightning part of the usb cable over. I have done a soft and hard reset on the phone. I have turned off and restarted my computer.

I have OSX 10.6.8, iTunes 11.0.4, iOS 6.1.4

My phone charges when plugged in and iPhoto recognizes it when plugged in. I have been able to get the phone to appear in iTunes, but iTunes freezes up and does nothing.

Also, same issue with my iPad 3.

This problem didn't occur until I updated to the latest update of iTunes.

Any additional advice would be greatly appreciated and welcome.
