iPhone 5 Sleep/Wake Replacement Program Eligibility?

Hi,

I have an iPhone 5 and for the past four days, the sleep/wake button has been doing odd things. My phone randomly tries to power off, takes random screenshots when I press the home button (as if I was pressing the sleep/wake button at the same time), or randomly "sleeps" (goes black) when I am in the middle of doing something. The button is also non-responsive when I actually DO press it.

I actually went to the Apple store today, and they put in the serial number for my iPhone, and it is eligible for the program (from what I understand, many iPhone 5's manufactured within a certain time period have issues with this button, so they have an entire program for it). However, my phone has chip off the upper left corner, and a dent in the upper right corner. When the woman saw that, she told me my phone was not eligible. She also told me there was "more going on than just problems with the sleep/wake button," which confused me because all the problems my phone is having seem directly related to the sleep/wake button. She suggested I restore my phone? But this seems like a hardware issue to me, so I don't really want to do that for no reason.

Is there ANYTHING I can do but replace my phone? I did not see anything online about a phone being ineligible if it has a dent in it. The dents have been there far longer than the sleep/wake button problem, so they are obviously not the cause. I just want the button replaced--why can't they do this if there is a dent? It doesn't make sense to me.

My phone is out of warranty, if that makes a difference.
