iPhone 5 - Black screen, only charging ping sound (when plugged in) - no water damage

My wife's iPhone 5 speaker wasn't very loud, so I thought I would replace it quickly. I have replaced many screens, batteries, home buttons, cameras, etc. in the past so this was very routine. I turned off the phone, lifted up the screen, and took the two screws out holding the speaker and replaced it. Took no more than a few minutes.

When tried to turn the phone back on, nothing happened. So, I tried plugging it in thinking it might have died. But, still the screen didn't work. Every 8 seconds or so, there's the sound that pings when you plug the phone in to charge.

I thought I would try to connect to iTunes to help troubleshoot. When connected, the phone says it can't connect because its locked with a passcode. I tried entering the passcode blindly (by swiping and tapping the screen where the code would be), but that hasn't worked. Another thing I noticed that is strange is that there are no sounds other than the pinging when charging (like tapping the buttons or pressing the sleep/wake button).

Lastly, I had an extra screen laying around thinking it might have just gone out. But, replacing the screen did not help.

Edit: I also tried replacing the battery. And, I can see the phone in iCloud - Find My iPhone.

I am completely baffled. Any ideas?
