iPhone 3GS - won't activate on official carrier

Hi guys,
I just sent my iPhone 5 in to get it fixed and since I kept my good old 3GS with 5.0.1 on it (jailbroken), I decided to use that while my phone is being replaced.

I plugged it to iTunes and tried to update it to iOs 6.1.2, the latest available for the 3GS.

However, when it was done, even though I had no SIM card installed, it said "searching..." and it seemed strange. I inserted the SIM card (the device is locked on Orange, don't need to unlock it since I'm still using their service) and no change at all. Eventually it says "No service" and I can't get it activated.

I tried to jailbreak it and I managed to do a tethered one with redsn0w (evasi0n does NOT activate the iPhone so it's useless to me since I have no service -> no activation), tried to upgrade the baseband to the iPad compatible one (still with redsn0w) and got an error.

Eventually, I restored to 4.1 because I didn't save the blobs for 5.1.1, used resn0w to jailbreak and install the iPad baseband, downgraded the baseband to 05.13.04 and it still wouldn't get any bars. However, when I installed redsn0w from Cydia, it worked perfectly.

When I saw that, I thought it'd be a good idea to build a custom IPSW for 6.1.2, preserving the baseband and performing a tethered jailbreak.

Tried to do it with redsn0w but later found out that it can't restore anything later than 6.0.

Got a PC, downloaded sn0wbreeze and created a custom IPSW, put the device into the iBooty recovery mode for restoring the firmware and got various errors. Tried updating the host file, tried running TinyUmbrella with the servers turned on, it eventually says that it can't be restored.

Normal restore works but it doesn't do me much good if it is perfectly working on 4.1 although I have to use ultrasn0w (basically to perform a useless unlock) and on 6.1.2 I can't upgrade and then downgrade the baseband.

Any suggestions will be MUCH appreciated, I find this very strange and believe me, I did google a lot!
