iPhone 4S wifi not working!

Greetings and happy new year all!

I purchased a new iPhone 4S last December (2012). I'm currently running iOS 7.0.4. Yesterday, the wifi just stopped working. I do not even have the option to turn it on anymore (it's just greyed out, see photo).

I moved to Kenya from New York last year so there is no Apple store to pop into here to sort this out. I tried the usual solutions myself (reset networking settings, restore iPhone, etc) and nothing worked. I did a webchat with someone from Apple and after we ran through the usual stuff, they said it's probably a hardware issue and I need to have a chip replaced. This is of course conveniently right after the warranty expired (d'oh!).:(

Does you guys have any other suggestions? The one place here that is approved by Apple to do repairs just lost their iPhone technician but they are hoping he comes back next week. I'm not sure if it's worth it to try to repair it or if i should just buy a new one. My issue is that I use wifi a LOT on my iPhone especially when traveling so this isn't something I can overlook (for example, bluetooth I wouldn't miss though that doesn't seem to be working either).

Grateful for any advice you can offer! Thanks :)
