Unlocked I-phone 5s

Hi,
I have just had my I-phone 5s unlocked in the uk by my carrier and I have now moved to Canada I wish to know if I don't pay my uk bill can they block my I-phone 5s or do I need to keep paying my bill until its out of contract.
