Hi : ) !!! - What is this cable for ??

Hi,

I "inherited" a cable from my uncle!

It has a "point" that enters the iPhone. From that "point",
it has two cables. One is to get connected to a USB port,
and the other one, is to get connected to fire wire. Does
it do more than just than connect the iPhone/iPod to either
a choice of the USB port or to the Fire Wire ??
