my iPhone 4S is about three weeks old after being replaced by Apple for the common dock mode sound issue but I've got an even weirder problem with my new one.
The phone has no sound except for during calls and not when put on loudspeaker (just the normal speaker). Other than that I get no sound at all and even when headphones are plugged in I get absolutely no sound from the (working) headphones.
Unlike the dock connector problem the phone's volume control can be used to take the volume up and down and the volume bar never disappears from the iPod function which means it's not in dock mode. I've cleaned out both the headphone and dock ports and everything is clear and fine. I've also tried a complete restore and restore from backup to no avail.
This makes me think it's a problem with the speaker located at the bottom of the phone. Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot? it's going to be embarrassing going back to Apple with a very similar problem after only 3 weeks!
