How to find out if an iPhone 5 is unlocked

Hi,

I want to buy an iPhone 5 from a friend but it has to be UNLOCKED - the iPhone is in the box and sealed and he doesnt know if it is unlocked or not and he doesnt want to open the box.

Are there any ways of finding out if the phone is unlocked?
