This problem began as soon as I upgraded to the 2nd most recent version of the iOS (I think 6.0), although I am now on the most recent version and the problem has not gone away. The following happens:
The Problem
While listening to music on the music app (shuffle or not shuffle), the phone will randomly skip the last ~ 1/5 of a song and go straight to the next song. What's interesting is that when it does skip, it will show that it is still playing the previous song that it skipped. If I then hit skip/fast forward, it will jump to the point in the "next" song (the one it is currently playing), where it is already playing, and effectively just update the song display info on screen. So, to make this more concrete, here's a hypothetical example.
For Example...
Let's say I'm currently listening to song A, which is 7 minutes long, and next on the lineup (shuffle or not shuffle) is song B, which is 3 minutes. At around the 6 minute mark of song A, the audio will suddenly skip to song B and start playing that song, while still displaying that it is playing song A. If I wait 30 seconds, then it will say it is at 6:30/7:00 on song A, when in fact it is 30 seconds into song B. If I then hit fastforward, the screen will change to say it is at 0:30/3:00 of song B, and it will keep playing. Only if I hit fastforward again will it then go to the next song after song B.
Things I Have Tried To Fix The Problem
1) I tried removing all the music from my phone, and re-adding it (by synching with iTunes).
2) I tried turning my phone off and back on (full power down / power up).
Other Possibly Useful Info
1) Everything was working fine prior to the iOS update
2) Shake to shuffle is off
3) It often tends to happen with the same songs (i.e. might not be totally random), and seems preferential toward longer songs.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts or advice.
