Will updating from iTunes 10 to 11 delete my backup?

It's a long story, but I need to restore my iphone with this backup I made and can't afford to lose it. (TL;DR at bottom)

I went to the apple store for a problem I had, and basically all they could do to help was reset my iPhone (and I think they updated it? in any case it's iOS 6.1.2) and I'm now trying to follow up with a restore from a backup I had. Now, I had planned ahead because I figured that at the very least I'd need a backup. So, I took my laptop which I rarely use to back it up on the iTunes on here. I haven't used this iTunes in a while, so naturally it said it required an update to be compatible with the iPhone. I updated it, got to backing it up and that was that, I was surprised at how easy it was. Now I'm here, a week later trying to open up iTunes only to get a message saying "the file 'itunes library.itl' cannot because it was created by a newer version of itunes" or something along those lines. I googled a fix and found one. I simply opened up my Itunes folder, dragged the file named "iTunes Library" to the desktop, opened up "Previous iTunes Library" and dragged the iTunes Library file from there (iTunes Library YYYY-MM-DD) to the encasing "iTunes" folder, and renamed it "iTunes Library."

Now I'm able to open iTunes again, but whenever I connect my iPhone it says "The iPhone 'XXXX's iPhone' cannot be used because it requires iTunes version 10.6.3 or later." Now when checking what version I have by going to Help > About iTunes it says "iTunes 10.0.0.68." It doesn't make sense to me, as I've updated just last week.

Anyway, I suppose the easiest fix would be to just update, but I only want to do so if I'm not risking my back up.

TL;DR - Need to restore my phone from the back up I have, but iTunes says it needs a newer version to connect with my iPhone. Would updating to the most recent version risk my back up? If so, anyway around this?

P.S. iPhone 4s, iOS 6.1.2, iTunes version 10.0.0.68
