In all the years I've been using "smartphones," and that includes several from Apple and several from other vendors, I've yet to come across one whose screen was usable outdoors in bright light. My latest, an iPhone5, is no different.
So I've been experimenting with wallpapers in an effort to determine which are "the best" for outdoor visibility. I've probably tried 100 different colors and textures, and I keep coming back to...basic black. I don't know why, but a black screen background seems to make the icons and the icon titles pop a little more. It's still not what I would call good, but at least I can see the icons under some circumstances in strong outdoor light.
I don't know why this issue hasn't been addressed by the phone manufacturers. I have electronic gear on my boat out in strong sunshine, and the manufacturers there have come up with the ability to produce readable screens, including readable screens on gear with list prices a lot lower than that of an iPhone.
What's your experience with this?
