charging is not supported with this accessory

Hello all -
First post here.

I have an older iPhone 3GS that I recently unlocked via AT&T since the phone's been out of contract for a while (I'm planning to switch over to AirVoice due to their much less expensive plans :D).

In order to unlock the phone, as per AT&T instructions, I had to restore phone which also ends up doing an upgrade of the OS. I was previously on 5.1.1 and had no troubles but in order to unlock I had to update to 6.0.1. There was no way around it.

Well, the phone unlocked fine, and the upgrade went smoothly, except now I'm having a very strange problem.

My phone will display the message "Charging is not supported with this accessory" on screen background (e.g. not a notification - see the screen grab below) randomly. And this is when I HAVE NOTHING PLUGGED INTO THE CONNECTOR on the bottom of the phone. The phone is just sitting on my desk, not connected to anything, and when I press the button, it shows my wallpaper for a second and then immediately shows that error message.

The phone charges just fine via iPhone charger plugged into wall, or iPhone cable plugged into computer.

So far I've done the following, to no avail:
1. Cleaned the tiny dustballs out of the connector port on the bottom of the iPhone - first using vaccum and then using a tiny isoprophyl alcohol swab.

2. Updated OS to 6.1 (which came out like 2 days after I unlocked the phone).

The phone seems to work completely fine otherwise. This is more of a nuisance than anything else.

Anyone have any thoughts or things I might try? Just to reiterate, I believe this is somehow related to iOS update and/or restore as the issue was not happening until I did that restore/update.

Thank you in advance!
