In October, the U.S. Congress has reconsidered its decision on the legality of phones unlocking. The amendment to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act equates iPhone unlocking from the operator as prohibited acts in the event that a mobile operator does not consent to the procedure.
So is it true that factory iPhone unlock will be illegal? Will I be able to unlock iPhone that I bought before 2013?
The law will come into effect tomorrow. While it is difficult to predict how the entry into force of amendments to the DMCA affect the unlock procedure, and what responsibility is envisaged for unlocking. But most likely, hackers prefer to forego the development of tools to unlock, because after the change in legislation mobile operators can start the prosecution of developers.
Fortunately, the new rules do not apply to people who are already saved the unit from binding to the operator. All the actions that occurred prior to January 26 are legal.
