iTunes 11 or not?

I know you require iTunes 11 to update to iOS 6.x.x from iOS 5.x.x and earlier. But do you still need it to backup or sync as well? I'm not very fond of iTunes 11, and want to revert back to iTunes 10. Just want to make sure it won't conflict with me doing backups and syncs.
